In the first round of the presidential elections in Poland, the mayor of Warsaw, liberal Rafel Szczakowski, is leading. He received 30.8% of the votes.
Two opponents to the second round: the Liberal and the Conservative
The second place is taken by Karol Navrotsky from the "Law and Justice" party - he received 29.1% of the votes. In third place is the far-right Sławomir Mentzen - 15.4%.
Why are elections important?
In Poland, although the president does not have such extensive powers, he has the right to veto laws. The previous conservative president, Andrzej Duda, suspended the reforms.
What will happen now?
No candidate exceeded 50 percent, so the second round will take place. Who the president will be - whether the liberal reformist government will move forward or not - depends on this.
