The United Kingdom is not prepared to welcome Bashar Assad's wife back into the country if she wishes to return. This was announced by the British Foreign Office.
Some Turkish and Arab media outlets had reported that Asma Assad had filed for divorce after 24 years of marriage and wanted to start a new life in her birthplace, London, Great Britain.
Asma, in turn, holds both Syrian and British citizenship. However, despite this, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy described Asma Assad as an "unwelcome person" in Great Britain after the fall of Damascus.
"I have been hearing in recent days about Asma Assad, a British citizen, possibly trying to enter our country. However, I must emphasize that she is under sanctions and is not a welcome person in the kingdom," – said David Lammy.
There was also a point in time when the issue of depriving Asma of her British citizenship, given her dual nationality, was raised. However, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer mentioned that it was too soon to discuss stripping Asma of her British citizenship shortly after the Assad regime had fallen.
It's a reminder that two weeks ago, opposition forces entered the capital Damascus and overthrew Bashar Assad's regime. Following this, the Assad family fled to Russia.
According to some sources, Bashar Assad is currently banned from leaving Moscow. However, Assad's wife has filed for divorce in a Moscow court and asked for "special permission" to leave the country.
According to Dmitry Peskov, the Press Secretary for the President of Russia, the restrictions on Assad's movements and the information about his wife's plans to divorce him "do not correspond to reality."
