The number of Uzbekistanis who died from poisoning with homemade alcohol in Istanbul has reached 14. The Consulate General's press service reported this.
It was reported that on January 16, four more citizens of Uzbekistan (all males) died in Turkey as a result of consuming counterfeit alcoholic beverages. It had been reported that 6 people died on January 14 and 4 people on January 15 as a result of poisoning. As of January 17, the total number of Uzbek citizens who died as a result of poisoning has reached 14.
According to the information obtained, as of January 17, the number of people diagnosed with consumption of counterfeit alcoholic beverages across Turkey reached 88, of which 37 have died. Among these victims are both locals and representatives of other nationalities.
According to information provided by the Istanbul municipality, local law enforcement agencies confiscated 32,862 liters of illegal methyl and ethyl alcoholic beverages in Istanbul city on January 16, 2025. 9 suspects have been arrested. During the investigations, 227 bottles of fake beverages and distillation equipment were also found. 3 of the arrested individuals were released after questioning by the police, while the investigation of the remaining 6 is ongoing.
Consulate diplomats visited the intensive care units of hospitals in Istanbul to check on citizens being treated for poisoning from counterfeit alcoholic beverages. The condition of three of them is critical.
The Consulate General urges all citizens to avoid consuming alcoholic beverages and to strictly adhere to personal safety rules.
