The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has opened a criminal case against the Minister of Defense, Rustem Umerov. He is accused of abusing his official powers. The charges against Umerov are outlined in Article 364 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code here.
According to the Anti-Corruption Center, the criminal case is related to actions aimed at pressuring and manipulating the activities of the independent oversight council.
The controversy began after the oversight council made a decision to extend the contract of AOZ Director Marina Bezrukov. According to the law, the council's decisions are legitimate, and Bezrukova's contract was extended until January 31, 2026. She has already started performing her duties.
However, Rustem Umerov is accused of being dissatisfied with this decision and exerting pressure on some members of the council. Sources indicate that the minister dismissed two members of the council and used his official powers to halt the organization’s activities.
Rustem Umerov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, was born in 1982 in the Bulungur district of the Samarkand region, in a Crimean Tatar family. On September 6, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Umerov to the post of Minister of Defense with great hopes. Rustam Umerov has been presenting himself as a reformer, but this incident could seriously threaten his reputation. If NABU confirms the minister abused his powers, it could lead not only to dismissal but also criminal liability.
This issue is causing a significant stir in political circles. Experts consider this event another serious test for the minister, as Umerov's attempts to control the financial flows of the Ministry of Defense have already attracted sharp criticism.
The investigation by NABU will clarify the fate of the minister, but this controversy is set to remain a hot topic in Ukrainian political discourse.
