Approximately 350 protesters attacked a humanitarian convoy attended by President Noboa with stones and Molotov cocktails in the city of Otavalo. There are no casualties among officials.
According to Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, the attack occurred last night in the city of Otavalo. The convoy included the President, along with representatives from the United Nations and the European Union, as well as the Italian ambassador. While the convoy, carrying out a humanitarian mission, was moving under military surveillance, approximately 350 protesters who had blocked the road attacked with stones and incendiary cocktails.
Images from the scene show the windows of vehicles in the convoy shattered. It is reported that no officials were harmed.
The attack occurred against the backdrop of protests that intensified after the President's decision to eliminate subsidies for diesel fuel. The price of diesel has now increased from $1.8 to $2.8. Protesters have started an indefinite strike and have blocked several roads. A state of emergency has been declared in some areas.
