The Paris city prosecutor's office requested the release of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy from prison and his placement under judicial supervision. The court granted this request, reported BFMTV.
A prosecutor's representative made the relevant statement during a hearing at the Paris Court of Appeal on November 10. The prosecution considers the ban on Sarkozy's contact with the accused and witnesses in his case as a condition for his release from prison. The defense also requested Sarkozy's release from prison and his transfer to judicial supervision.
It is noted that the court set the following main conditions for Sarkozy's release under judicial supervision:
- A ban on leaving French territory.
- A ban on contacting other persons involved in the case, including witnesses and other accused.
- Regular reporting to the police station for registration.
Sarkozy was sent to La Santé prison in Paris on October 21 to serve a five-year prison sentence.
Sarkozy was sentenced to prison for illegally financing his election campaign with funds from the Libyan government (Muammar Gaddafi). He became the first former president in France to receive an actual prison sentence.
Sarkozy is also currently under formal investigation in another case related to aiding in the exertion of pressure on witnesses.
