According to a BBC report, Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson once again became the center of attention after she wore a black burqa in parliament. Her action was a demonstration carried out after the Senate rejected her bill. Hanson's bill aimed to ban the wearing of full-face coverings in public places.
The action was met with sharp criticism from Muslims and other senators. Muslim Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi from New South Wales called the action "blatant racism." Independent Senator Fatima Payman from Western Australia described it as a "shameful act."
Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the action "disrespectful" and considered Hanson unfit as a parliamentarian. Hanson wrote on her Facebook page: "If they don't like me wearing a burqa, then ban it."
For reference, Hanson also wore a burqa in parliament in 2017 and called for a national ban. In her 2016 speech to the Senate, she spoke about the country being under the threat of a "Muslim invasion," which is reminiscent of her controversial 1996 speech about being "swamped by Asians."
