The election process is ongoing in Armenia. This political process could influence which foreign policy direction the country will choose in the future — whether to continue rapprochement with the West or to restore relations with its traditional ally, Russia. This was reported by the BBC.

Elections in the South Caucasus state, which has a population of three million, are being closely watched by the international community. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is seeking re-election for another term with promises of European integration. At the same time, Armenia is striving to expand cooperation with the West amid increased economic pressure from Moscow.

Pashinyan, who came to power in 2018, has been pursuing a policy of reducing dependence on Russia. He has put forward an initiative to start the process of joining the European Union, and has also intensified peace processes with Azerbaijan mediated by the United States.

At the same time, his domestic support has significantly declined — from 54 percent in 2021 to about 30 percent currently. One of the main reasons cited is the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh: in 2023, Azerbaijan took military control of the region.

Pashinyan’s critics condemn him for making concessions in exchange for peace with Azerbaijan. The peace agreement with Azerbaijan remains a controversial issue in society — according to polls, 44 percent of the population supports it, while 41 percent oppose it.
