Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has begun a large-scale personnel reshuffle in the country's government. The head of state has recommended Serhiy Koretsky, the head of the national company "Naftogaz," for the position of Prime Minister. At the same time, he also intends to replace Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. This was reported by the Reuters agency.
According to the publication, Zelensky put forward the candidacy of Serhiy Koretsky for the head of government on July 15. The president emphasized that one of the most important tasks facing Ukraine is preparing the country for the winter season.
"The priority tasks are clear – preparation for winter. After all consultations, I have become convinced that Serhiy Koretsky is the most suitable candidate for the position of Prime Minister," Zelensky said.
According to Ukrainian legislation, the candidacy of the Prime Minister is approved by the Verkhovna Rada. Since the president's "Servant of the People" party holds a majority in parliament, Koretsky's candidacy is expected to be approved.
At the same time, Zelensky also plans to dismiss Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov from his post. According to parliament deputies, he may be replaced by Ihor Klymenko, who has been serving as Interior Minister since 2023.
This decision has elicited mixed reactions in Ukrainian political circles. Some deputies and military analysts have stated that Fedorov's replacement could negatively impact the country's defense capabilities.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Oleksandr Merezhko, noted that Fedorov enjoyed a high reputation among international partners and that his name was associated with reforms in the Ministry of Defense.
Volunteer movement activist Maria Berlinska also criticized the decision, calling it a step that could have serious consequences for Ukraine.
Fedorov, in turn, stated on his Telegram page that serving Ukraine was a great honor for him, noting that during his tenure, he expanded the drone program, improved the defense procurement system, and initiated reforms in the ministry.
