The Asian Development Bank approved an additional grant of $15 million for Tajikistan to expand the project that reconnects the country's power grid with Uzbekistan through an interconnection network into the Central Asian unified energy system project .
The additional funds will allow the construction of a new 500 kV electric transmission line spanning 22 kilometers between the "Sughd" substation in the north of Tajikistan and the "Yangi Sirdaryo" substation in Uzbekistan.
This will help increase the potential for electricity exports and imports among the states in the single energy system of Central Asia, which includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and also strengthen the infrastructure to prevent network disruptions, the report states.
According to the ADB, the project will ensure Tajikistan's energy system is prepared to provide energy and frequency control services for the seamless integration of renewable energy in the region. In the long term, it is expected to become a key component of the scheme for transmitting electric power from the Rogun HPP in Tajikistan.
