The leader of the South Korea Democratic Party called the arrest of President Yoon a “first step” towards restoring democracy
The main opposition in South Korea - the leader of the Democratic Party stated on Wednesday that the arrest of President Yoon Suk Yeol by investigators is a “first step” towards restoring the country's constitutional order and democracy. The Republic of Korea's Yonhap news agency reported this.
"(This) is the first step towards restoring the constitutional order and democracy and ensuring the supremacy of law," said lawmaker Park Chang Dai at a party legislators' meeting. The lawmaker accused Yoon of violating the constitution and laws by declaring a state of military emergency on December 3, calling him a “serious criminal”.
We remind that South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested by investigators for the second attempt. After several hours of resistance at the presidential residence, this time the investigators managed to bring Yoon to the Corruption Investigation Bureau's building. The first attempt to arrest the President by investigators was unsuccessful at the beginning of January.
Earlier, Yoon Suk Yeol released a brief video statement stating that he believes his arrest is illegal, but decided to comply with the investigators and police to prevent bloodshed.
In early December, the President of South Korea tried to impose martial law in the country, after which the parliament accused him of attempting a coup and declared impeachment.
Yoon has been deprived of his presidential powers since December 14, when the parliament voted for his impeachment. However, the impeachment must be confirmed by the Constitutional Court before he is officially removed from office. Until the court makes a decision, Yoon Suk-Yeol remains officially the president.
