Australia is experiencing some of the most catastrophic floods in recent years. Specifically, a severe flood in New South Wales resulted in the death of 4 people and several others have gone missing. BBC reported this.
According to the channel, heavy rain moved south last night, reaching Sydney and Newcastle cities on May 22. The Meteorological Bureau has issued a warning for the southern parts of the state.
The New South Wales Emergency Service has responded to more than 535 rescue operations in 24 hours – until 05:00 local time, and more than 670 since the beginning of the flood.
More than 100 schools have been closed due to flooding, and thousands of homes and businesses have been left without electricity. Evacuation centers have been opened for those affected by the floods.
The city of Taree on the mid-north coast has been the most damaged. On May 21, the flooding in a major river in the area exceeded 6.3 meters, breaking nearly a century-old record for its highest level. There is a risk of flooding affecting nearly 10,000 homes in the state's mid-north coast.
“We are bracing for even worse news. Delivering supplies to the isolated population is very difficult,” says New South Wales Premier Chris Minns.
Minns also urged those in areas ready for evacuation to leave if possible, but acknowledged that some are unable to do so.
“They could be elderly, disabled, or have young children. But if we can save the majority from harm, it makes everyone's job much easier,” he said.
