The Australian government imposed financial sanctions and visa bans on four members of the Taliban leadership in Afghanistan on December 6. This was reported by "zamon.uz".
These measures are being applied due to the severe restriction of the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. As Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized, the officials placed on the sanctions list are directly responsible for restricting women's rights to education, work, freedom of movement, and participation in public life.
The sanctions target three ministers and the Taliban chief justice, who will be excluded from international financial operations and will be unable to enter Australia.
According to Minister Penny Wong, these measures were implemented under the Australian government's new sanctions regime and are aimed at increasing pressure on the Taliban regime and highlighting the oppression against the people of Afghanistan.
Australia withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in August 2021. Since then, the country has evacuated and accepted thousands of Afghan citizens, primarily women and children, who were under threat to their security.
Today, millions of people in Afghanistan are surviving on humanitarian aid. The international community continues to criticize the Taliban for the severe restriction of women's rights. The movement's leadership describes its policy as "in accordance with Islamic values and local customs."
