The European Union has fined China's popular online shopping platform — Temu 200 million euros. According to the European Commission, dangerous children's toys, chargers that do not meet safety requirements, and other illegal products were sold through the platform.
It was noted that the company failed to establish an adequate control system for identifying and assessing risks associated with products offered for sale. It was also emphasized that necessary measures were not taken to prevent the spread of products that threaten consumer safety.
An official investigation into Temu's activities began in October 2024. During the investigation, as a result of control purchases carried out by experts, it was found that some chargers did not meet electrical safety requirements, and some children's toys contained excessive amounts of hazardous chemicals.
It was reported that the company must submit a plan to the European Commission by August 28 to address the identified deficiencies, otherwise additional measures may be applied.
Temu, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, stating that it considers the fine amount unjustified and will defend its position through legal means.
