The Senegalese government has temporarily banned non-essential foreign trips for ministers. The country's Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, announced this during a meeting with youth. According to him, due to the escalation around Iran, the price of a barrel of oil has risen to almost double the indicator planned in the budget.
Within the framework of the restrictions, Sonko also canceled his planned trips to Niger, Spain, and France. Next week, the Ministry of Finance is expected to announce additional measures to reduce state expenditures.
Other countries on the continent are also taking measures against the fuel crisis: South Africa reduced the gasoline tax, Ethiopia sent some civil servants on leave, electricity is being rationed in the capital of South Sudan, and Zimbabwe is increasing the ethanol blend in fuel.
The military actions by the US and Israel against Iran have also impacted the delivery of fertilizers due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The International Rescue Committee described this situation as a "food security bomb" and stated it poses a serious threat to East Africa.
