It is said that thousands of citizens from Central Asia have been recruited into the Russian army for the war in Ukraine. The largest number of participants falls to the share of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Zamon.uz reported on this.
The independent journalist Grigory Pirlik's "Ukraine-Central Asia" project has identified a total of 12,666 individuals from Central Asia. Among them are 4,853 Uzbeks, 3,407 Tajiks, 2,389 Kazakhs, 1,439 Kyrgyz, and 578 Turkmen.
In 2025, lists regarding Uzbek citizens were announced twice: 1,110 people in May and another 902 in July. In the following months, information was collected on another 2,841 Uzbeks.
According to Ukraine, Central Asians are mainly being sent as infantry to the most dangerous directions. Some migrants have said they were forced under pressure in Russia to sign contracts.
