Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei did not attend the funeral of his father, the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Zamon.uz reported this based on information from The New York Times reported.
According to reports, the funeral prayer for Ali Khamenei was expected to be held in Tehran on July 5, while farewell ceremonies were held in five cities of the country and will continue until July 9. However, Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen at the ceremonies so far.
The head of the ceremony organizing committee, Akbar Pourjamsheedian, had earlier stated that the issue of attending the funeral was not within his authority. Nevertheless, many supporters expressed hope of seeing him at the ceremony.
According to sources, potential security threats, including the risk of Israel identifying or targeting his location, were the reason for Mojtaba Khamenei's absence from the ceremony.
At the same time, some sources noted that the supreme leader himself expressed a desire to attend certain parts of the funeral. It is said that he wanted to participate in the ceremony planned for July 9 at the Imam Reza shrine in the city of Mashhad and offer prayers for his father.
For reference, farewell ceremonies for Ali Khamenei began in Tehran on July 3, in which foreign delegations, including representatives from Uzbekistan, were noted to have participated.
