President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the law on ratification of the agreement between the governments of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan on joint management and rational use of transboundary water facilities.
This agreement was signed on November 15, 2025 in Tashkent, and is aimed at fair and efficient use of water resources between the two states, as well as ensuring the stable operation of water facilities of interstate importance.
Within the framework of the document, an intergovernmental commission on the management of transboundary water facilities will be established between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The commission will coordinate issues of using shared water resources, operating hydraulic structures, and ensuring their safety.
Additionally, the parties have agreed to exchange information, expand cooperation, and implement joint projects in the water sector.
Experts note that this agreement will serve to efficiently use water resources in the Syr Darya basin, reduce risks associated with water scarcity, and strengthen water cooperation in the region.
For reference, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan jointly use transboundary water resources in the Syr Darya basin. These waters are of vital importance for agriculture, supplying the population with drinking water, energy, and environmental sustainability.
