In his address, the President paid tribute to the memory of heroes who demonstrated courage on battlefields and contributed to saving humanity from the scourge of fascism, while expressing high respect for the war and labor veterans living among us today. Additionally, the memory of military personnel and law enforcement officers who died defending the borders of the Motherland during the years of independence was also commemorated.
It was noted that in the war against fascism, 1 million 950 thousand people from Uzbekistan, which at that time had a population of 6.8 million, participated. Over half a million of them perished, more than 158 thousand went missing, and over 60 thousand returned as disabled. 214 thousand soldiers and officers from Uzbekistan were awarded combat orders and medals, and 301 were granted the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
The President recalled that during the war years, Uzbekistan became a solid logistical base on the home front, and the republic provided shelter to over 1.5 million evacuated people, including 250 thousand children.
It was noted that in recent years, support for veterans has been consistently ongoing, and this year, participants and disabled veterans of World War II received a monetary reward in the amount of 30 million soums. It was also stated that commemorative events, meetings of three generations, and sports competitions are being held across the country.
At the conclusion of the address, the head of state emphasized that preserving peace and stability, as well as strengthening national unity and solidarity, are the most important tasks of today, and congratulated all compatriots on the holiday.
