Over the past half century, the average testosterone level in men has dropped significantly. Scientists indicate that this condition may be a serious trend related to male reproductive health. The Guardian reported this, citing research results presented at the annual congress of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in London.

According to the study, between 1972 and 2019, the total testosterone level in men decreased by an average of 54 percent. According to experts’ calculations, this means an average decline of more than 1 percent was observed each year. Analyses have shown that this trend accelerated after 2000.

The study covered the results of six long-term observations conducted in Israel, the USA, Brazil, Finland, and Denmark. It analyzed the medical data of more than 118,500 men.

According to scientists, the spread of obesity and diabetes may be one of the main factors contributing to the decrease in testosterone levels. Excess body weight enhances the conversion of testosterone into the hormone estrogen, thereby reducing its amount.

At the same time, experts emphasize that environmental factors, such as chemicals affecting the endocrine system, air pollution, certain harmful compounds in household items, and climate change, may also influence this process. However, additional scientific research is required to determine the impact of these factors.

According to Professor Hagai Levine of the Hebrew University of Israel, male reproductive health is one of the important indicators of overall health status, and negative changes in this regard require serious attention.

Experts note that testosterone plays an important role in sperm production, libido, muscle mass, bone strength, mood, energy levels, and metabolism. Therefore, its decline may affect not only reproductive health but also a person's overall health.

Scientists have also urged against taking testosterone medications without a doctor's prescription. According to them, such substances can, in some cases, suppress the body's natural sperm production process. Therefore, any hormonal treatment should be carried out under the supervision of a specialist.
