"Uzatom" Nuclear Energy Agency's Nuclear Power Plant Construction Directorate and "Atomstroyexport" JSC ("ASE" JSC, the engineering division of "Rosatom") signed a protocol to start work at the construction site of the low-power nuclear power plant (LPNPP) to be built in Uzbekistan.

The document was signed in the presence of Azim Ahmedkhodjaev, Director of the Nuclear Energy Agency under the Government of Uzbekistan, and Nikolay Spasskiy, Deputy Director General of the State Corporation "Rosatom" – Director of the International Activities Block.

It is noted that the signing of the document ensures the transition to an active phase in the preparation work at the construction site, the development of design documents, and the licensing process necessary for the project implementation.

"The protocol signed today defines the compliance with the priority terms from the point of view of regulatory and financial obligations of the parties. Rosatom's engineering division will begin an active phase of obtaining a license for the LPNPP site and conducting exploration work at the construction site," – says Pavel Bezrukikh, Director of Nuclear Power Plant Construction Projects in Central Asia at ASE JSC.

Preliminary work on the NPP project began in June this summer, when the first construction headquarters was placed on the site where the future nuclear power plant is to rise.

For reference, a contract signed on May 27, 2024, envisages the construction of a nuclear power station in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan according to the Russian design, with a total capacity of 330 MW (six reactors, each with a capacity of 55 MW). "Atomstroyexport" JSC is considered the main contractor for the construction of the NPP.
