The President-elect of the United States called the difference in defense spending between the US and other North Atlantic alliance members "unfair." This was reported by zamon.uz here.
"They need to pay their bills. If this doesn’t happen, I will reconsider the US-NATO relationship after the inauguration," Trump emphasized to NBC News.
The American politician has long criticized that not all NATO countries allocate at least 2 percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to defense expenses, as noted in the alliance's agreements.
According to the Institute for Economic Research, among NATO countries, apart from the United States, only Poland and Great Britain have been spending more than 2 percent of their total GDP on defense every year since 1990. The shortfall in necessary defense investments is estimated at approximately 230 billion euros in Germany, 120 billion euros in Italy, and over 80 billion euros in Spain.
