Against the backdrop of Russia's war in Ukraine and the increasing threats to the Baltic states, the Danish government makes a historic decision: from now on, women will also be conscripted for mandatory military service alongside men.
According to officials, the draft will be selective — if there are not enough volunteers, a lottery system will also be applied among women. This system is expected to be fully operational by 2026.
The new measures are being adopted with the aim of strengthening Denmark's defense capabilities, effectively fulfilling its obligations within NATO, and ensuring regional security against Russian aggression.
With this, Denmark becomes one of the first countries in Northern Europe to make military service mandatory for women.
