On January 27, 2025, a statement by US President Donald Trump aimed at ending the war in Ukraine increased hopes for peace talks in the international community. In his speech, Trump said: "Come to an agreement now and stop this pointless war," — as reported by Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper writes.

The war in Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, has seldom heard such strong calls for peace. Trump emphasized that if he had been president, this war would never have started. His election campaign was based on this viewpoint, suggesting that if elected president, the war in Ukraine would not have happened. Interestingly, Russian President Vladimir Putin also supported this view, saying, "If Trump's victory had not been taken away in 2020, there would have been no crisis in Ukraine," — he said.

It appears that the time has come to achieve peace in the war in Ukraine. Whether there will be a meeting between Trump and Putin or peace talks between Russia and Ukraine will begin remains an open question. Meanwhile, some analysts emphasize Putin's intention to maintain the conflict in Ukraine until 2025, as it would be difficult for Ukraine to continue this war without US assistance. Understanding this, Putin says, "I can continue this war for another 2-3 years," — he says.

The international community is now hoping for new opportunities for peace talks in Ukraine following Trump's statement.

According to the publication, peace talks on Ukraine might be held this year in April-May. Prior to these, a meeting between US and Russian Presidents Trump and Putin is expected. “First, a ceasefire will be announced. Then peace talks will begin. During the negotiations, Turkey might take on a certain mission and President Erdoğan might assume the role of mediator, as he is the only leader who can communicate with both Putin and Zelensky. Now Trump has joined their ranks,” — the article says.

Furthermore, it is highlighted that currently both Trump and Putin want peace, and Zelensky, having lost the support of America, has “no chance of fleeing the negotiation table”.
