European Union officials have reported that member states should resume receiving Russian gas as part of a potential agreement to end the war in Ukraine, according to the Financial Times.

Proponents of the idea assert that purchasing Russian gas would help lower high energy prices in Europe, invite Moscow to the negotiating table, and encourage both sides to establish and maintain a cease-fire regime. However, initial negotiations have caused dissatisfaction among Ukraine's strongest supporters in the European Union, Financial Times writes.

According to three officials familiar with the negotiations process speaking to the newspaper, this idea has been supported by officials from Hungary and Germany, as well as a number of other European Union officials – countries that consider this measure a way to reduce energy costs.

At the same time, this proposal has angered leaders in Brussels and several Eastern European countries. Most of them have been trying to reduce the European Union's dependence on Russian energy since the beginning of the major invasion of Ukraine.
