The case of the death of a person taken into custody in Surkhandarya has been brought under the control of the Ombudsman.

Investigations continue in Surkhandarya region regarding the criminal case of 50-year-old farmer Tokhir Khaitov who was taken into administrative detention and later died, reports sparking numerous discussions. This was reported by
the information service of the Human Rights Representative (Ombudsman) of the Oliy Majlis. 

This situation is being monitored by the Human Rights Representative (Ombudsman) of the Oliy Majlis, and information related to the case is being reviewed.

According to the Ombudsman, T. Khaitov was found guilty based on the decision of the Uzun District Court on criminal cases dated February 24, 2025, under Article 183 of the Administrative Responsibility Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan (minor hooliganism) and was sentenced to 6 days of administrative detention. He was deteriorating health-wise on the way to the administrative detention facility in Termez city and was brought to the Sariosiyo district medical assistance unit. However, medical staff declared his death.

The conclusion of the Sariosiyo district forensic medical examination stated that the deceased died as a result of ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, heart aneurysm, and cardiac tamponade. Moreover, he had complications from pyelonephritis and arteriosclerosis. No physical injuries or their marks were found on his body during the forensic examination.

Pre-investigation check actions are being conducted by the Sariosiyo district prosecutor's office regarding this situation, the investigation is under the supervision of the regional prosecutor's office.

A request was sent to the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan by the Ombudsman regarding this situation.

The Ombudsman requests a comprehensive, thorough, and objective review of this case during the pre-investigation check.
