Major infrastructure work is proceeding at a rapid pace within the framework of the construction of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan international railway. This was announced by Transport Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov said.

“More than nine kilometers of tunnel have been excavated” — Transport Minister on how the construction of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway is progressing

According to the Minister, excavation work is currently being carried out in 25 tunnels under the project, and a total of more than 9 kilometers have been excavated.

Under the project, a total of 29 tunnels, 50 bridges, and 19 stations are planned to be built, including two border stations and a loading and unloading terminal.

More than 5,800 pieces of special equipment and nearly 9,000 workers have been mobilized for the construction work. Construction has now begun on a number of facilities, including frame bridges, where foundation and trench work is being carried out.

According to officials, this strategic project is expected to be completed by 2030. Once operational, the railway is expected to create the capacity to transport up to 15 million tons of cargo per year, as well as reduce the average delivery time for goods to 7 days.

The idea for the project was first proposed in 1996, and several feasibility studies have been prepared over the past years. The project had been delayed for many years due to mountainous terrain, financing issues, and technical complexities.

In June 2024, a formal agreement on the railway construction was signed between the three countries. On December 27 of the same year, construction work officially began.

According to officials, this major infrastructure project will serve to improve regional transport links, increase cargo flow, and further expand economic cooperation.
