Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazim Gharibabadi, sharply reacted to US President Donald Trump's statement about declaring the Strait of Hormuz a US territory. This was reported by Tasnim news reported.

According to Gharibabadi, the Strait of Hormuz cannot be seized by a tweet, an aircraft carrier, a decree, or a campaign speech. He stated that Iran is not afraid of threats and will not surrender to pressure related to the use of force.

The Iranian representative also noted that the opening or closing of the strait is under Iran's control. This statement came at a time when the issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz has escalated between Tehran and Washington.

Earlier, Trump said that after Iran is "defeated", he would declare the Strait of Hormuz a US territory. He stated that the US Navy had blockaded the strait and that the movement of ships depends on Washington's will.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered an important strategic corridor for world oil trade. About one-fifth of the world's seaborne oil usually passes through it. Currently, tensions and movement restrictions in the strait are also affecting the global energy market.
