In 2025, migrants and refugees made more than 100,000 attempts to reach Europe from North Africa across the Central Mediterranean. TASS reported this, citing data from the International Organization for Migration and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. According to a joint report, last year the number of attempts to cross the Central Mediterranean from Libya, Tunisia and Algeria toward Italy and Malta amounted to 100,777. This is 21 percent less than in 2024. It is noted that this migration route remains extremely dangerous. In 2025, 1,330 people died on this route. In 2024, this figure was 1,754. Last year, among those who attempted to reach Europe via the Central Mediterranean migration route, citizens of Bangladesh, Sudan, Egypt, Eritrea and Pakistan made up the majority.
