In recent days, information that has not been confirmed and is unfounded, as well as not based on reliable official sources, is being widely spread through social media regarding a criminal case being investigated by the Prosecutor's Office. The Prosecutor's Office has warned social media users and the media against disseminating false information.
"Whereas, a rapid-investigation group consisting of qualified staff from the relevant agencies has been formed regarding the situation, and it has been reported that investigative actions are continuing. Additional details will be reported in due course.
The legislation clearly defines rights and responsibilities in the field of information – this is especially relevant for bloggers with a large and active audience, as well as administrators of groups and channels on social networks. This is because many in society accept any information they disseminate as the truth.
Media representatives must also not forget that they are required to comply with existing legal standards in the field, just as is demanded from government bodies.
Therefore, with the aim of preventing the spread of various incorrect interpretations and assumptions among the public, we strictly request that mass media rely and refer only to official information provided by the press service of the Prosecutor's Office when covering rapid or investigative measures conducted by the employees of the prosecution authorities.
The Prosecutor's Office once again reminds that there is criminal liability for spreading false, untrue, and panic-inducing materials in any form among the population!" - states the official report.
