The smuggling of ancient coins from the Bukhara Emirate period was uncovered by the customs administration employees of the Kashkadarya region, it was reported. 

It was revealed that a citizen identified as H.H., who intended to depart on flight HY-9623 in the direction of “Karshi-Moscow” through the “Karshi airport” border customs post and was moving through the “green lane”, was stopped during the customs control of hand and checked luggage through an X-ray machine and during a personal inspection carried out with witnesses present. This individual was found to be illegally exporting from our country a total of 116 ancient coins made of metal, which are of ancient and historical significance, not declared in the passenger customs declaration, and whose exportation from the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan is prohibited, being manufactured more than 50 years ago.

Currently, an administrative proceeding has been initiated regarding this case, and it has been forwarded to the judicial authorities. 

Additionally, the seized ancient coins have been handed over to the “Kashkadarya Regional Museum of History and Culture”. The relevant conclusion of the Agency for Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Uzbekistan noted that among these coins there are also coins minted during the Bukhara Emirate period.

For your information, during the past period of this year, the employees of the “Karshi airport” border customs post have prevented 10 instances of illegal smuggling across the customs borders of cultural assets worth more than 10 million soums, comprising a total of 168 items of historical significance. 

We remind you that, according to the Decree No. 131 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated March 23, 1999, “On the regulation of issues related to the export and import of cultural assets in the Republic of Uzbekistan”, the regulation of the export and import of cultural assets from our country is also carried out by the Customs Committee. 

According to this regulation, cultural assets created fifty years ago or earlier are not allowed to be exported from the Republic of Uzbekistan.
