The European Union purchased 4.48 billion euros worth of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia in the first six months of 2025. This is nearly a billion euros more compared to the same period last year, according to Eurostat.
Overall, Europe imported 26.9 billion euros worth of LNG during this half-year, with the majority coming from the U.S. — amounting to 13.7 billion euros.
Gas from Russia is transported via maritime tankers. No sanctions have been imposed against it, and it is primarily purchased by Spain, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
Austria, Poland, and the Baltic states, however, have voluntarily refrained from Russian gas.
