On August 21, the Swedish government announced the start of construction of a new generation of nuclear reactors in the country.
According to the announcement, 3 to 5 small modular reactors (SMRs) will be built at the Ringhals NPP located in the southwest region.
They will generate approximately 1500 megawatts of power, which is equivalent to two full-scale reactors.
These will be the first nuclear reactors built in the country in the last 50 years.
In a 1980 referendum, the Swedish population voted to gradually phase out nuclear energy, and since then, 6 out of 12 reactors have been shut down.
However, today a political majority supports developing nuclear energy alongside renewable sources—this is intended to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The new mini nuclear power plants are scheduled to be launched by approximately 2035. Their construction is expected to be faster and more economically affordable compared to traditional reactors.
