The number of higher education institutions operating in Uzbekistan reached 215 at the beginning of the 2025/2026 academic year. This was reported by the National Statistics Committee.

It is noted that this figure is 4.1 times higher compared to the early years of independence. In particular, in 1991 there were only 52 higher education institutions in the country, while today their number has reached 215. Branches are also included in the calculations.

According to statistical data, the number of higher education institutions increased from 52 in 1991 to 69 by 2015. In subsequent years, rapid growth was observed in the sector, reaching 127 in 2020, 154 in 2021, and 191 in 2022.

For reference, in recent years, large-scale reforms have been implemented in Uzbekistan to establish new higher education institutions and open branches of foreign universities. As a result, higher education coverage and the number of institutions have significantly increased.
