Portugal national team head coach Roberto Martinez has left his position. He announced this at a press conference held after the 2026 World Cup round of 16 match against Spain.
Portugal lost that match 0-1 to Spain due to a single goal conceded in extra time and left the tournament.
"This cycle has come to an end. Now it is time to move forward. Appointing a new head coach for the national team is the responsibility of the federation president. I express my gratitude to everyone who trusted and supported me," said Roberto Martinez.
The 52-year-old Spanish specialist was appointed head coach of the Portugal national team in January 2023. Under his leadership, the team won the 2024–2025 UEFA Nations League.
During his career, Martinez also coached the Belgium national team. He also worked as head coach at English clubs Everton, Wigan Athletic, and Swansea City.
Now, the Spain national team will face Belgium in the World Cup quarter-finals.
