Russian armed forces have captured the New York settlement in Ukraine's Donetsk region.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, as a result of active operations by the "Center" forces units, Ukrainian military units have been defeated, and the strategically important New York settlement in the Toretsk agglomeration has been taken under control.

There is no other source confirming the area's occupation by Russian forces. It should be noted that channels affiliated with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence reported on heavy battles for the New York settlement in the Donetsk region on the night of August 20.

The publication "Ukrainska Pravda" has written that 20 percent of the settlement's territory remains under Ukrainian control, and Russian military forces have captured a part of New York, moving towards the Nelipovka area.

Before the war, the New York settlement in the Bakhmut district of the Donetsk region was home to 11,000 residents. The Russian army began its operations to capture this area starting from the summer months.

The foundation of the New York settlement was laid by a community of Mennonites invited to Eastern Ukraine by Russian Empress Catherine II.  From 1951-2021, the area was known as Novgorodskoe.

Although Russia is advancing through the Donetsk region of Ukraine, it still has not managed to repel Ukrainian military units that have entered its territory.
