Uzbekistan recognizes the seriousness of the climate change problem and will increase the production of green energy to 40 percent by 2030. This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Energy Umid Mamadaminov at the Investment Forum on Energy Transition in Central Asia which took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, within the framework of COP29 informed.
According to the ministry official, Uzbekistan is an advocate for transitioning to clean energy and developing carbon markets. According to his words, the republic is also a high energy-consuming country, with 70 percent of its emissions coming from the energy sector.
“In recent years, Uzbekistan has been striving to integrate renewable energy sources and achieve sustainable development goals by 2030. Electricity generated from renewable sources will constitute at least 40 percent, hence our main goal is to increase the production of electricity from renewable sources,” said Mamadaminov.
The Deputy Minister added the importance of collaborating on transboundary connections with neighboring countries in the transition to clean energy.
“Currently, many hydropower projects are being implemented, and we have started collaboration with Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and also with Tajikistan,” says the Deputy Minister.
According to Mamadaminov, all Central Asian countries are currently developing their strategies on the carbon market. In Uzbekistan, the regulatory framework in this area is being developed and will be ready by the end of 2024.
He also emphasized the necessity of cooperation with financial institutions and the support of the international community to achieve climate goals.
