The State Duma of Russia ratified the agreement on cooperation between Russia and Iran. This document promises to strengthen cooperation in the defense sphere and establish the exchange of intelligence data between the two countries.

"This agreement is an open political signal. This document shows that the Turkish-backed Syrian opponents do not want the defeated Iran to surrender to Russia and want to continue their game in the Middle East," says DW commentator Konstantin Eggert.

Eggert also noted that Moscow and Tehran have many common interests, and Putin considers cooperation with Iran to be in his interests.

"Theoretically, this treaty could have been a cause for 'trade' in several ways - for example, if the US agreed to recognize the occupied Ukrainian territories as Russian," the political commentator suggests.

However, Eggert openly explained that the main threat to the Kremlin is a change in the Iranian regime.

"If the Oman talks between Iran and the US end in failure, and Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu decide to strike Iranian military and nuclear facilities, the regime in Tehran may not be able to bear it," the political scientist said.

The politician also stated that if opposition comes to the Iranian government, then all cooperation programs with Moscow will be frozen.

"If the US's'maximum pressure' strategy on Iran is implemented, the Russian-Iranian cooperation agreement is likely to be short-lived," he said.
