A Democratic Party member of the United States Congress, Shri Thanedar (Michigan state) presented a proposal containing seven articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump on Monday.
This marks the first attempt at impeachment against Trump or members of his administration in 2025. In his statement, Thanedar referred to Trump as a “person unfit for the presidency, posing an open and present threat to the Constitution and our democracy” here.
The impeachment articles he presented include charges of obstruction of justice, abuse of power, illegal appropriation of authority, bribery, and corruption.
The charges are mainly related to Trump's personal wealth and efforts to centralize power.
However, the likelihood of the impeachment proposal being realized is very low, as the Republican Party holds control in both chambers. Thanedar theoretically has the right to demand a vote on impeachment, but has not yet expressed such an intention.
The leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, said he has not yet reviewed the proposal. The White House has not yet provided an official comment.
Among the charges against Trump is also the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. According to the congressman, this person was illegally sent to El Salvador. Thanedar also criticized the establishment of the Government Efficiency Department (DOGE) under the leadership of Elon Musk without Congress's permission, which led to a reduction in financing for some government agencies.
Another reason cited for impeachment is Trump's trade tariff policy. The congressman believes that it has negatively affected the international economy.
