According to the Australian television channel ABC, US officials have not yet authorized the delivery of 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. The fact is that the US, as the manufacturer of this military equipment, must allow this export.

According to the source, the US side expressed concern to the Australian authorities about the logistical costs of sending the tanks and the difficulties that will arise in providing them with maintenance in Ukraine.

"Another aspect of the problem is that if a peace agreement is signed, it will be uncomfortable for tanks to be on board in the middle of the sea. In addition, there is a shortage of qualified personnel necessary to supervise them on a sea voyage," the Australian official said in an interview with ABC.

The Australian Ministry of Defense, in a statement to ABC, stated that it continues to prepare to surrender 49 tanks to Ukraine. According to them, the export process is still ongoing.

For reference, Australia announced the transfer of M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in October 2024. The funds allocated to them are estimated at $163 million.
