The European Union has officially lifted its economic sanctions on Syria. The announcement was made by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

“Today we decided to lift our sanctions on Syria. Our goal is to help the Syrian people rebuild a peaceful, inclusive, and renewed Syria. The European Union has supported the Syrian people for the past 14 years, and we will continue to do so,” Kallas said.

This decision comes as Syria continues to face economic hardship following years of civil war. EU diplomatic representatives described the move as a humanitarian step.

For context, the European Union had imposed sanctions on the Bashar al-Assad regime and its affiliates since 2011. These included financial restrictions, trade bans, and travel limitations.

The new decision is expected to improve access to humanitarian aid and assist ordinary Syrians. At the same time, the EU emphasized that the Syrian government must avoid further human rights violations.
