Against the backdrop of anti-immigration raids in the USA, the federal government doubled the number of National Guard members in Los Angeles.
According to a statement on social media by California Governor Gavin Newsom, 4000 National Guard troops have been deployed in the city. Additionally, AFP agency reports that another 700 US Marines have been sent to the city.
Former President Donald Trump has threatened to send more federal forces to the city if the demonstrations continue. He also mentioned that "disrespect shown towards the deployed military personnel could result in the use of force" against protesters.
While the protests continue, CNN reported that law enforcement agencies are using rubber bullets and stun grenades to suppress the demonstrations. As evening approaches, law enforcement is trying to clear the city streets and disperse the remaining protesters.
California Governor Gavin Newsom sharply criticized Trump's actions, labelling them "un-American." According to him, the US Marines are intended to combat foreign threats and should not be used domestically.
"This is an action in the direction of bringing to life the wasteful dream of a president-dictator," – said Newsom. Moreover, the governor declared Trump's order to transfer the National Guard under his control as illegal and announced that he would challenge it in court.
