The Earth is rotating faster.

By the year 2035, it may be possible to remove one second from the days.

July 10, 2025, was the shortest day—it lasted 1.36 milliseconds less than the usual 24 hours. Scientists are concerned that this phenomenon could pose risks to technological systems, particularly computers and artificial satellites.

Since 1955, time has been measured precisely using atomic clocks. Previously, due to the Earth's slower rotation, an extra second was added to UTC time starting in 1972. But now, for the first time, scientists are discussing the opposite possibility—removing a second.

This situation is linked to the Earth's natural movements, the Moon's influence, seasonal factors, and global warming. Experts emphasize that if glaciers had not melted, these changes might have occurred even sooner.
