A court in Moldova's Chisinau city sentenced Gagauzia leader Evghenia Guțul to 7 years of imprisonment.

She was accused of illegally receiving money from Russia and financing the activities of the banned "Șor" party. During protests that erupted following the court's decision, hundreds of supporters and opponents clashed.

Political analysts believe this verdict could spur the activation of pro-Russian forces.

At the same time, this ruling may discourage citizens willing to sell their votes. Moldova's parliamentary elections are scheduled for September 28.
