It has been determined that there are also foreign citizens among the deceased, but their nationalities have not been disclosed yet. Several investigations have been initiated due to the tragedy: the transport company, the national transport safety agency, and the criminal police are investigating the incident.

According to witnesses of the incident, the funicular's brake system failed, causing it to move downhill at high speed and eventually crash into a building. The Mayor of Lisbon and the country's President expressed their condolences to the families of the victims. The government has declared a day of national mourning in connection with the incident.
