The number of citizens emigrating from Germany has been increasing in recent years. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, the three most chosen countries among them are Switzerland, Austria, and Spain.
Over 323 thousand German citizens currently live in Switzerland. In Austria, more than 232 thousand Germans reside — this figure has increased by a record 41 percent within one year. In Spain, there are nearly 128 thousand German emigrants.
Experts point to the proximity of Switzerland and Austria and the absence of a language barrier as the main reasons.
Spain, on the other hand, attracts Germans with its climate and cost of living. At the same time, some of those leaving the country cite concerns related to the economic crisis, the migrant issue, political tensions, and the threat from Russia as their reasons.
