Penske Media, the owner of publications such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Variety, has filed a lawsuit against Google in a federal court in Washington. Zamon.uz reported on this.
According to the claim, the technology giant is allegedly using journalistic materials without permission through its artificial intelligence systems, drastically reducing the number of visits to the publishers' official websites.
This lawsuit is considered the first of its kind against Google (Alphabet). For several months, publishers have been emphasizing that Google's new "AI Overview" feature is pulling audience away from their sites, resulting in a decrease in advertising and subscription revenue.
Google only provides links to their sites in search results if their articles are used in the AI summaries.
Otherwise, Google would have had to pay publishers for the right to use their content.
The company evaluates this as an exploitation of Google's dominant position in the search market. According to a federal court ruling, Google controls nearly 90 percent of the US search market.
