According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the epidemiological situation related to cholera is worsening worldwide.

In particular, in 2024, the number of infections for this disease increased by 5 percent compared to 2023, while mortality rates increased by 50 percent. That is, last year more than 6000 people fell victim to cholera. Zamon.uz reported on this.

Furthermore, the number of countries where epidemic foci have been identified in 2024 has reached 60. This is also 15 more than the previous year's figure.

The list of regions with high growth rates is led by countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. One quarter of the disease's victims died without reaching a medical facility.

An alarming aspect is that the global cholera crisis continues into 2025: the fact that the spread of the disease has been recorded in 31 countries since the beginning of the year confirms this.

Therefore, the WHO has called on governments, donors, and local communities to fight cholera in a coordinated manner. For this, it is first necessary to provide the population with safe drinking water and hygiene means.

Accordingly, a new innovative oral cholera vaccine (OCV) was approved at the beginning of last year. However, the speed of its delivery to the outbreak areas is not at the required level.

In turn, effective epidemiological surveillance and rapid diagnostics can yield significant results in containing cholera.
