The Iranian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Its composition also includes Hamid Ghanbari, Deputy for Economic Diplomacy of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The US negotiating group is led by the President's Special Envoy Steve Witkopf, and Jared Kushner is also among the delegation members.
Prior to the negotiations, leaders from both sides met with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi. The head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that Tehran is entering the negotiations "with a firm determination to defend its rights." The main priority for Iran is considered to be the cancellation or easing of sanctions.
According to reports, Washington attempted to broaden the agenda, but Tehran agreed only to discuss the nuclear program issue. According to sources of the "Axios" publication, these talks were organized following pressure from Arab allies on the US President.
We recall that in 2025, Steve Witkopf and Abbas Araghchi also held five rounds of negotiations in Oman, but they ended without results. In July, after the US strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, contacts between the sides were halted. On January 26, Donald Trump called for concluding a new agreement envisaging Iran's complete renunciation of nuclear weapons.
