Today, on August 10, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred in the western part of Colombia. The tremors were felt in several regions of the country, as well as in neighboring Ecuador. This was reported by the Associated Press.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 280 kilometers west of the capital Bogota, near the municipality of San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó. The earthquake's focus was recorded at a depth of 107 kilometers.
Following the strong tremors, residents left homes and buildings for safety. The governor of Chocó department, Nubia Carolina Córdoba Curi, reported that there are injured people and serious damage to buildings in the region.
According to later reports, the number of victims and injured people increased as a result of the earthquake, and buildings were destroyed in a number of cities. Rescue operations are ongoing.
The earthquake was felt in some areas of Ecuador and Panama, as well as in Colombia.
It should be recalled that on June 24 of this year, two strong earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 occurred in Venezuela. Later, country officials announced that the number of victims reached several thousand. According to the World Bank, about 5,000 people died as a result of these earthquakes.
